Kenya Research 4

Objective

To increase the capacity of host country station personnel and university students to plan and conduct quality research in aquatic sciences. Linkages with host country universities will be made by offering training opportunities and student stipends to students from Kenyan universities. Student research will address aquaculture issues that are important in the host country or the region.

Significance

Trained individuals contribute to the functioning of the CRSP site, and enhance host-country capabilities in aquaculture.

Anticipated Benefits

Trained individuals provide a means of maintaining CRSP impacts beyond the life of the CRSP in the host country.

Identification of Beneficiaries

African site operators, host country aquaculture, trained individuals, CRSP researchers. Host-country fish farmers will be indirect beneficiaries.

Collaborative Arrangements

OSU and AU collaborate with the host country site personnel and university faculty.

Methods

Site: Sagana Fish Culture Farm

Plan:

a) Train station field personnel (8 people including the seine crew and mid-level technicians at the station) in stratified sampling of fish populations, fish handling and transport.

b) Train two station laboratory technicians in the areas of water, soil and feed sampling procedures, proper cleansing of labware and water quality analyses and computer operation.

c) Train university bachelor degree candidates in a variety of topics applicable to aquaculture in Africa. Provide thesis research topics and direction for degree candidates.

Identification of Deliverables

Beginning in 1998, two student projects per year should be published. Student research will be published in appropriate regional journals.

Schedule

a) and b) training activities will begin immediately following the arrival of the US researcher. Training activity c) will begin no later than summer 1997, with two university students receiving training per year.
