Eighth Work Plan

1 August 1996 to 31 July 1998

Table of Contents

Introduction to program

The Eighth Work Plan of the Pond Dynamics/Aquaculture CRSP was developed by the CRSP Technical Committee and describes activities to be conducted by the CRSP during the period 1 August 1996 to 31 July 1998
Table of Contents . This is the first work plan under a new grant by USAID (grant number: LAG 4023-G-00-6015-00) which started 1 August 1996. Previous activities were described in the Interim Work Plan which covered the period from 1 September 1995 to 31 August 1996. The Interim Work Plan was necessitated by a cost-extension to the preceding grant which was scheduled to end with the Seventh Work Plan.

The first three CRSP work plans specified identical experiments at all CRSP sites to provide a baseline for comparisons among sites. This approach was changed starting with the Fourth Work Plan when different, but related experiments were conducted at the various sites. The particular topics studied at each site were based on the research and information needs in each country, as identified by the Technical Committee.

Eighth Work Plan Research Priorities and Constraints

In comparison with previous work plans, the Eighth Work Plan represents a broadening of research areas, a strengthening of research support activities, and increased integration among sites. In the past, production research has been the centerpiece of PD/A CRSP research. Now the CRSP recognizes research into environmental effects, and social and economic aspects as two additional fundamental research areas. Research support, which in previous work plans had been limited to the PD/A CRSP Central Database, was strengthened by the addition of the Education Development Component. Lastly, the integration of CRSP sites was improved with the development of cross-cutting research which may be conducted at more than one site and whose results may have more immediate, wider application than results from prime and companion site investigations. (See tables 1 through 3 for an overview of the research priorities and constraints of the following areas: cross-cutting research, regional research, and research support.)

The Eighth Work Plan will be implemented in the following prime sites: Honduras, Kenya, Peru, and Thailand. The Philippines, previously a companion site to Thailand, is slated to assume prime site status in the near future. Regional outreach of each of the prime sites has been initiated under this work plan and is intended to be strengthened during the next two work plans.
