Abstract
Since 1982, the PD/A CRSP has provided international scientists an organizational framework within which to conduct pond aquaculture research that has directly benefited 20 countries. The PD/A CRSPs Management Entity based at Oregon State University has worked with over 250 scientists from the U.S. and host countries. The research focus has shifted since the PD/A CRSPs inception. Initially established to conduct a global experiment that compared variables of pond inputs and environments, the PD/A CRSP today emphasizes research and extension activities. These provide small- to medium-scale aquaculture farmers with appropriate technology to increase fish production. To maximize these benefits, sociological and economic studies have received increasing support. This multidisciplinary approach ultimately improves peoples lives through increasing the supply of alternative sources of protein and micronutrients. Here we summarize the PD/A CRSPs history, organization, and benefits to U.S. and host country institutions. Highlights include PD/A CRSP projects that have enhanced economic growth and food security in host countries.
PD/A CRSP History
Recognition of the U.S. land and sea grant university systems ability to build human and institutional resources for agriculture in other countries led to declaration of the Title XII legislation in 1975, Famine Prevention and Freedom From Hunger. Combined efforts of the US Agency for International Development (USAID) and the university community helped draft the legislation, which included provisions for the establishment of the Collaborative Research Support Program (CRSP) model. In 1982, the Pond Dynamics/Aquaculture CRSP became one of the original eight CRSPs funded through USAID. Three more CRSPs were authorized in later years. For the 21 years following its inception, the PD/A CRSP has supported development and extension of aquaculture technologies. These efforts have enhanced food security in developing countries and strengthened the capacities of U.S. and international institutions to carry out aquaculture research.
